Curriculum Description Examples

Homeschoolers are required by law to submit a curriculum description along with the annual Notice of Intent (NOI). (Code of Virginia,§22.1-254.1 B).

The school division cannot ask for more than the law requires or make judgment about the merits of your curriculum. At the same time, the school division is within its rights to determine whether you have actually written and submitted a "description of your curriculum." Example 1

Our curriculum for Mary and John is based on interdisciplinary, child-initiated learning. Their course of study will involve a combination of formal instruction, independent study, unit studies, and project-based learning, using textbooks, computer-based correspondence coursework, the public library, multimedia materials, and various community and family resources.

For 10th grade, Mary will be studying Theatre Arts and Journalism, Geometry, Computer Programming, Chemistry and Environmental Studies, Television Production, and Physical Education.

For 5th grade, John will be studying Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Social Studies, Performing Arts, Drawing, and Physical Education. He will focus on refining his oral and written communication skills through individual and group activities. He will build speed and proficiency with basic arithmetic operations, focusing on decimals and fractions.

Example 2

Learning is a lifestyle in our home and every moment is an opportunity for learning. In addition to this lifestyle of learning, Mary will be doing 4th grade coursework in the following subjects: Math, Language Arts, Geography, Handwriting, History, Science, Spelling, and Spanish. In her studies we will make use of the library, field trips, videos, computer curriculum, and other resources that we deem useful.

Example 3

We will begin instruction for the fourth grade this fall. As required by law, below is a description of our curriculum for the upcoming year.

We will continue to use Horizon Math 4 for our math curriculum, supplementing our studies with math in everyday life.

Language arts will again include participation in a writing group where he must write in a variety of styles and mediums, He is exposed to a variety of literary concepts, which he must incorporate into her writing.

We will continue to develop vocabulary through individual and family reading.

We will use a grammar program and a variety of software programs to support spelling, keyboarding and further phonetic development. John will also continue cursive instruction through the Handwriting without Tears program. We will continue a cross-curricular approach to literature as well as grammar and writing.

Other areas of studies will be explored through a multitude of learning mediums, including participation in a history group, a science fair, geography day, music lessons, theatre course and field studies.

My program is child-led, adapting to the interests and needs of each of my children. I treasure the ability to make changes when a program of study or textbook is not proving to be effective. Should you require any additional information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
